Summary:

The Holy Spirit is within you for the purpose of developing God's character in your life. He comes upon you for service and ministry to others. You must develop the nine fruits of the spirit
(God's character) in order to operate in the nine gifts of the Spirit
(God's power).

  1. The dual work of the Holy Spirit is to dwell within you and to come upon you (John 4:14; 7:38).
    1. The operation of the Holy Spirit within you is for your character development.
      1. To develop character according to the Word of God, you will need to operate in the nine fruits of the Spirit (love, joy, peace, longsuffering,
gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness and temperance).
    2. The function of the Holy Spirit upon you is for service and ministry to others.
      1. You must first settle the unresolved character issues within yourself before you begin to serve others. If you lack character, you will lack power.
      2. Once godly character is developed in you, the Holy Spirit will assist you in ministering to others.

  2. A successful life will be based on your level of character (1 Timothy 4:8).
    1. Character is doing what is right because it's right. You will never rise above the level of your character.
      1. Having godly character is the key to operating in the fullness of the Holy Spirit's power.
    2. To develop character you must decide to do what is right despite how you feel.

  3. You must have a balance between holding fast to the written Word of God and paying attention to the Holy Spirit's directions when He prompts you to
    do something.
    1. The Holy Spirit will save you from destruction when you obey His leading (Psalm 103:4). He wants to lead you to profit, peace, well-being and abundant life (Hebrews
      8:6).
    2. The written Word of God is your safeguard. It assists you in developing discernment of God's voice.
      1. When you hear a voice within, better known as your conscience, you have to make sure it lines up with the Word of God. Do not ignore the voice
within, but allow the written Word to confirm what you perceive in your
        conscience.

  4. Before they had the Bible in written form, Christians heard from God and carried out His commands because they were prompted by the Holy Spirit (2 Corinthians
    3:1-6).
    1. If you are born again, you have been delivered from the law. You effectively serve others by being obedient to the promptings of the Holy Spirit (Romans 7:6, AMP).
      1. You have to know enough of the Word to know the prompting of the Holy Spirit. Otherwise, you will mistake your own voice, or the voice of the enemy for God's voice.
      2. You shouldn't hold fast to the letter of the Word and ignore the Holy Spirit's promptings (2 Corinthians 3:6).
      3. When you know the Word of God, you will know the voice of God.
    2. Never disregard the prompting of the Holy Spirit.
    3. If your ability to discern the Holy Spirit's voice is still developing, be led by the peace of God in your heart when you must make decisions. If you don't have peace, don't
      move.
    4. Spiritual maturity is always demonstrated by the decisions you make.
      1. Develop a decision-making process that is in line with the written Word rather than your emotions.

  5. If you walk in the Spirit, you will not fulfill the lusts of the flesh (Galatians 5:16).
    1. Walking in the Spirit is a way of thinking that lines up with the Word of God.
      1. Everything begins with your way of thinking.
      2. Program your thinking with the Word of God.
      3. Your mission in life should be to develop the character of God (John 15:5).
    2. The love of God is poured in you by way of the Holy Spirit. He helps you develop in the love of God (Romans 5:5).
    3. If you fail to align your thinking with the Word of God, you limit His power from operating in your life.
    4. You have to spend time with God in order to develop knowledge of the Holy Spirit. You do this by spending time studying and meditating on the written Word as well as
through praise, prayer and worshiping God.
    5. Trust God and not your own abilities.
