Summary:

Most people try to eliminate bad habits by using willpower. However, to permanently defeat lustful cravings, addictions, and bad habits, you need more. Begin to rely on something greater than yourself. Allow the Word of God to penetrate your mind and change your mindsets. Then you will begin to live the life God intended for you, free from the bondage of sin.

  1. In your everyday decisions, choose God's way of doing things; don't fall in love with the world's way (1 John 2:16, 17, AMP).
    1. Refuse to operate in the world's system, which is based on selfishness.
      1. The world's way contradicts God's way of doing things.
      2. In the world, lust is the ruling force.
        1. Lust is an intense appetite for a selfish desire you want to fulfill.
    2. The Kingdom of God is based on love.
      1. God's way leads to reward here on Earth and eternal life.
    3. Free yourself from the trap of lust by doing the following things:
      1. Walk in the spirit or live a life that is governed by the Word of God.
        1. Realize willpower is not enough; you need God's help.
        2. Operate in the Spirit and you will not fulfill the lust of the flesh (Galatians 5:16, 17, AMP). iii. Understand the flesh is a mindset that opposes the Word of God.

  2. The law of sin and death is still working, but you do not have to become subject to it (Romans 7:14-25; 8:1-7)
    1. The law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus frees you from the law of sin and death (Romans 8:2-4).
      1. If you set your mind on carnal or fleshly things, you will pursue those things.
      2. However, when you set your mind on the kingdom of God, you will pursue spiritual things (Romans 8:5-7).
    2. To be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.
    3. The carnal mind opposes God.
    4. The flesh profits nothing, but in the Spirit there is life (John 6:63).

  3. Conquer your ways of thinking that does not line up with the Word.

    1. You are what you think (Proverbs 23:7).
      1. Ask yourself, where did I get this way of thinking?
        1. The people you spend the most time with frame your thinking.
        2. The way you think comes from the words and images you are exposed to.
        3. Your life will ultimately be determined by the way you think.
    2. Do not live as those who have rejected God; they have turned themselves over to the lust of the world (Ephesians 4:17-19, AMP).

      1. They become subject to lasciviousness, which is when they cannot find the brakes to stop engaging in a certain behavior or habit.
    3. To operate by your old way of thinking will hinder your ability to overcome old behavior.
    4. Your mind must be renewed by the Word (Ephesians 4:20-24, AMP).
      1. You are the only one who can renew your mind; no one else can do it for you.
      2. Take off the old man (your old, worldly way of thinking) and put on the new man (new way of thinking in Christ).
