Summary:

If your thinking, ideas and attitudes don’t line up with the Word of God, you must change. Renewing your mind is the key to lasting change. When

your mind is renewed, you will respond differently to old temptations.
You must have a desire to change and make a decision to never go back
to your old habits. If you don’t like what you are doing, you must
examine the influences around you.

  1. You must renew your mind in order to change your life (Romans 12:1, 2).
    1. Identify where you got your mindset, ideas and attitudes.
    2. Recognize that if they don’t line up with the Word of God, they are wrong.
    3. When your mindset changes, it produces a different response to an old temptation.

  2. You must have a desire to change.
    1. The man with the infirmity for 38 years made excuses as to why he couldn’t receive His healing (John 5:1-7).
    2. Jesus told him to get up and walk (v. 8).
    3. Like the man with the infirmity, you must take immediate action to change your life.
    4. When he took immediate action, he was instantly healed (v. 9).

  3. To see lasting change, you must never go back to your old ways.
    1. You must break bad habits.
    2. If you have bad habits, examine the words, images and influences coming in your life.
      1. Negative, ungodly words, images and influences are designed to seduce you back to your old ways.
    3. You will never go beyond the character you possess.
    4. Going back to your old ways is like a dog returning to its vomit (Proverbs 26:11).
    5. Go forward and never go back.
    6. Going back to sinful ways, after you’ve experienced the goodness of the Lord, will not be satisfying or fulfilling.
    7. After you receive your healing or deliverance, stop sinning.
      1. Jesus warned the man who was healed of the infirmity that he must stop sinning, or something worse would happen to him (John 5:14).
      2. Jesus was not afraid to confront the man about his sin.
      3. Even though the man was healed, he was setting himself up for the consequences of bad decisions.
    8. God has been good to you, now change.

  4. There are four keys to never going back to your old lifestyle.
    1. Plant different seeds than the ones you have been planting.
    2. Develop new relationships with people who will support and reinforce your change.
    3. Get in church and learn to walk with God.
      1. The man who was healed was found in the temple (John 5:10-14).
    4. Change the way you think, and you’ll change the way you live.
