Summary:

When Adam sinned in the Garden of Eden, he caused all of mankind to be sinful. As a result, we are all born with a sin nature. However, we can be born again spiritually by confessing Jesus as our Lord and Savior. Jesus died so that we can be free of sin’s control over us. Iniquity is sin passed from one generation to the next. Sin is missing the mark, which causes us to miss God’s best for our lives. Transgression is sin we commit against one another. Sin produces bondage and oppression of every kind, but the shed blood of Jesus has set us free from it all.

  1. We were all born with sinful characteristics and traits (Psalm 51:5, AMP).
    1. The effects of sin last for generations. But God shows mercy on those who love Him and keep His commandments (Exodus 20:5-6, AMP).
      1. We begin to liberate ourselves from sin and iniquity when we become born again.
      2. However, we become completely free when we allow our lives to be ordered by God’s Word (Psalm 119:133).
    2. Renewing the mind is the process of exchanging our thoughts and beliefs for God’s thoughts and beliefs.
      1. Holiness is being of one mind with God.
      2. Renewing the mind or changing our thinking is a lifetime process, not a one-time event.
  2. Do not deceive yourself. Do the Word and be blessed (James 1:22-25).
    1. Many Christians hear God’s Word but do not do it. They are set on going after their own plans (Ezekiel 33:31-33).
      1. Some people do not want to be free of the bondage of sin.
    2. They have replaced God with something or someone else.
    3. If you walk in the spirit, you will not fulfill the lust of the flesh (Galatians 5:16).
      1. To walk in the spirit means to have a mind-set that agrees with God’s written Word.
      2. Lust is an intense desire, rooted in selfishness.
      3. The flesh is a mind-set that is contrary to the Word.
