Followers of Jesus Christ are supposed to be good citizens.

Although our true citizenship is in heaven, we also have a responsibility as citizens where we live on earth.

PHILIPPIANS 3:20 NKJ 20
For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ,

Pray

1 TIMOTHY 2:1-2 NKJ
1 Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men,
2 for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence.

Be Submissive

ROMANS 13:1-5 NKJ
1 Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God.
2 Therefore whoever resists the authority resists the ordinance of God, and those who resist will bring judgment on themselves.
3 For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to evil. Do you want to be unafraid of the authority? Do what is good, and you will have praise from the same.
4 For he is God's minister to you for good. But if you do evil, be afraid; for he does not bear the sword in vain; for he is God's minister, an avenger to execute wrath on him who practices evil.
5 Therefore you must be subject, not only because of wrath but also for conscience' sake.

TITUS 3:1-2 Jerusalem
1 Remind them that it is their duty to be obedient to the officials and representatives of the government; to be ready to do good at every opportunity;
2 not to go slandering other people or picking quarrels, but to be courteous and always polite to all kinds of people.

TITUS 3:1-2 NEB
1 Remind them to be submissive to the government and the authorities, to obey them, and to be ready for any honourable form of work;
2 to slander no one, not to pick quarrels, to show forbearance and a consistently gentle disposition towards all men.

1 PETER 2:13-17 NKJ
13 Therefore submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord's sake, whether to the king as supreme,
14 or to governors, as to those who are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers and for the praise of those who do good.
15 For this is the will of God, that by doing good you may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men --
16 as free, yet not using your liberty as a cloak for vice, but as servants of God.
17 Honor all people. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the king.

Pay Taxes

ROMANS 13:6-7 NKJ
6 For because of this you also pay taxes, for they are God's ministers attending continually to this very thing.
7 Render therefore to all their due: taxes to whom taxes are due, customs to whom customs, fear to whom fear, honor to whom honor.

MARK 12:14,17 NKJ
14 . . . Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?
17 Then Jesus answered and said to them, "Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's." And they marveled at Him.

MATTHEW 17:24-27 NKJ
24 And when they had come to Capernaum, those who received the temple tax came to Peter and said, "Does your Teacher not pay the temple tax?"
25 He said, "Yes." And when he had come into the house, Jesus anticipated him, saying, "What do you think, Simon? From whom do the kings of the earth take customs or taxes, from their own sons or from strangers?"
26 Peter said to Him, "From strangers." Jesus said to him, "Then the sons are free.
27 "Nevertheless, lest we offend them, go to the sea, cast in a hook, and take the fish that comes up first. And when you have opened its mouth, you will find a piece of money; take that and give it to them for Me and you."

Do Not Complain

PHILIPPIANS 2:14-15 NKJ
14 Do all things without murmuring and disputing,
15 that you may become blameless and harmless, children of God without fault in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world,

When To Disobey

ACTS 5:27-29 NKJ
27 And when they had brought them, they set them before the council. And the high priest asked them,
28 saying, "Did we not strictly command you not to teach in this name? And look, you have filled Jerusalem with your doctrine . . . ."
29 Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said: "We ought to obey God rather than men.

Our first allegiance is to God and we must obey Him -- even if it means imprisonment or death.

ACTS 10:36 NKJ
36 " . . . Jesus Christ -- He is Lord of all --
